Endodontic tooth treatment

Why is endodontic tooth treatment necessary?

If the pulp (the nerve) gets infected, the infection can spread through the root canals. The infection spreading can lead to inflammation of the tissue around the tip of the root and the formation of abscess. Abscess is an inflamed area in which pus is collected and it can cause swelling of the tissue around the tooth. Symptoms of the abscess can range from blunt to severe pain, and the tooth can be sensitive even during chewing. If the root canal treatment is not done, the infection will spread, and the final outcome will be tooth extraction.

Is endodontic treatment painful?

No, it isn’t. The whole procedure is done in local anaesthesia, therefore the procedure is painless.

What is the goal of the endodontic treatment and how long does it last?

The goal of the treatment is to remove infection from the root canal. The root canal is then cleaned and filled with appropriate material to prevent the spread of the infection.

The treatment of the root canal is a delicate procedure, most treatments involve two or more visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the infected nerve is removed from the canal, the root canal is cleaned and disinfected, and then the medicine, whose effect lasts for about seven days, is administered, depending on the case. At the next visit, the medicine is taken out from the canal, and then the canals are permanently filled with certain pastes. After that, a follow-up X-ray is made.

How will my tooth look like after the treatment?

The most common change that occurs after many years after the tooth treatment is that the tooth is slightly darkened. Such a change does not occur necessarily. If the tooth still darkens, and this is a tooth in the visible region, then it can be bleached, or the problem can be solved with composite facets or crowns.

What if the infection returns?

Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection returns, treatment can sometimes be repeated.

Is the tooth safe after the treatment?

Yes, it is. However, since the teeth with the extracted nerve can be less resistant, it may be necessary to reinforce them by posts or to place the crowns (cover) on them. It all depends on the extent to which the crown of the treated tooth is preserved.
