How does diabetes influence oral health?

Diabetes has influence on teeth and mouth health and it can increase the risk of certain diseases. One in five cases of tooth total loss is connected with diabetes.
The gums and teeth problems occur due to the damages of the blood vessels which are important for the diet and for the protection of the oral cavity health. The lack of saliva i.e. the dry mouth can contribute to tooth decay development.

Gum diseases and diabetes

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? If your answer is positive, that can be an early sign of a gum disease. If the situation gets worse, you can expect advanced gum inflammation, with the damages of the bone around the tooth, which actually means that you are on a good way to get paradontopathy.

Dry mouth and diabetes

The researches show that people suffering from diabetes have less saliva. The patients with diabetes can have the sensation of burning and stinging in their mouth due to reduced saliva excretion. This situation is in a direct connection with the tooth decay development.

Mouth infections

Due to reduced saliva excretion, the ability to fight back the microorganisms decreases. This situation can result in oral candidiasis, i.e. the white deposits on the mucous membrane and gums. This disease occurs in people who have total or partial prosthesis. Besides the oral candidiasis, other infections can occur, particularly those ones accompanying the diabetes.

Slower healing wounds due to diabetes

Since the sugar level in blood is increased, it can be expected that it takes longer for the wounds inside the mouth to heal. This is most commonly manifested by thrushes which also take longer time to heal. Furthermore, longer bleeding from the wound is a typical symptom which should be considered if the tooth extraction is indicated in the patient suffering from diabetes.

How to enhance the teeth and mouth health?

Regular maintaining of the oral hygiene is mandatory. It is also advised to use the mouthwash as well as the interdental toothbrush and dental floss. Naturally, diabetes must be kept under strict control by using appropriate foods and therapy prescribed to you by your endocrinologist.
