Pregnancy and teeth health

What are the most important issues for the dental health during pregnancy?

The most important issue is a good oral hygiene. This means regular teeth cleaning, in the morning and at night, with the use of interdental brush and dental floss.
The correct oral hygiene reduces the plaque and the soft deposits on the teeth and the gums, and therefore it represents the prevention against gingivitis (the gums inflammation) and tooth decay.

Can the gum inflammation happen despite the good oral hygiene?

Yes, it can. The gums inflammation can appear in pregnancy as a response to different hormone imbalances which happen in this period. However, if the oral hygiene is at the satisfactory level, the inflammations will not be severe and they will be alleviated more easily.

Can gingivitis influence the baby’s health?

According to some researches, there is a connection between the gingivitis and lower birth weight of the baby. Also, there is a study which shows that the bacteria from the inflamed gums which end up in the mother’s blood circulation may, in some cases, cause the premature birth.

What is the prevention?

If you are planning to become pregnant or if you suspect that you are pregnant, you should see your dentist immediately. The best option is to take care of all pathological conditions before the pregnancy, which means repairing all the teeth with cavities, undergoing calculus and soft deposits removals. It is also necessary to pay attention to semi-impacted (semi-erupted) wisdom teeth which can cause problems if inflamed. That is why the extraction of those teeth is advised before the pregnancy.

Should you avoid certain dental interventions?

If it is necessary, the dental intervention must be performed. Here, the focus is on the painful and emergency conditions. The therapy of any disease that is not of acute nature and which does not threaten the general health and condition of a pregnant woman should be delayed for the period after the birth. Regular calculus removal and soft deposits removal is advisable.

Is it harmful to have your teeth X-rayed in pregnancy?

Pregnant women should avoid any unnecessary exposure to the X-rays. The X-ray imaging is done only in cases of emergencies where the X-ray image is necessary to establish the right diagnosis and to conduct the therapy.
