Primary teeth injuries

When do primary teeth injury occur the most?

Dental trauma to primary teeth most commonly occurs between the ages of 2 and 4. In this period toddlers begin to walk but they are not stabile enough and they quite often fall down. Most usual injuries are injuries to the upper incisors.

Why is it important to go to the dentist after the injury?

The primary teeth injuries have the potential to obstruct the development and the health of the permanent teeth. It is very important to establish the trauma degree which is done by the clinical check-up and X-ray analysis, on which basis the dentist decides what type of treatment to conduct and to what extent.

What kind of injuries are there?

The force on the primary teeth can lead a change in the position of the injured tooth. The most common injuries are tooth luxation which means that the tooth has been moved (dislodged) to one side. Also, the tooth can be pressed down or pushed out from its socket. Tooth avulsion (knocked out tooth) happens less frequently as well as the breaking of the tooth crown.

Are there any complications of the primary teeth injuries?

Fortunately, in most cases there are no complications because these injuries cause mild changes of the tooth position. The complications may occur in the cases where the primary tooth has been pressed down which may cause the injuries of the permanent tooth which has not come in yet.

How are the primary teeth injuries treated?

In most cases the therapy is not needed. It is advised to consume soft food for the several weeks’ period and in majority of cases this is quite enough. However, if the primary tooth is pressed down, it must be extracted since it is possible that the permanent tooth, which will replace the primary one, might be damaged.

Are the follow-up check-ups necessary later?

Definitely. It is necessary to have a follow-up check-up and to make the follow up X-ray in order to be certain that the injury has not led to any later complications.

What to do in case of the injury?

The most important procedure after the tooth injury is to take the child to the dentist in the shortest possible time in order to determine the trauma degree, prescribe the adequate therapy and prevent the possible damage of the permanent teeth.
