Tooth pain

What causes the pain?

Pain is, unfortunately, the most common reason why one visits the dentist and it can be the consequence of various diseases, but it is most usually associated with the pathological conditions of the teeth.

What types of tooth pain are there?

The pains can be of different intensity and duration. Depending on the type of the disease, certain type of pain occurs.

Short-lasting pains of a high intensity

If you experience these unpleasant sensations, then most probably, the tooth sensitivity is located in the region of the tooth neck. This pain appears when consuming cold beverages and it goes away in a few seconds. Similar symptoms can occur in the cases of sensitivity after the procedures, in other words, after the tooth has had a filling placed. This type of pain can happen if there is some disease of the tooth pulp (the nerve).

Long-lasting pains of a weak intensity

These symptoms are related to chronic diseases of dental pulp and the tissue around the root tip. The pains are most often described as dull and achy, and they are repeated in certain periods.

Continuous pains of a high intensity

These pains are related to the acute form of the disease of dental pulp or the tissue around the root tip. The pains are most frequently throbbing, with higher intensity at night. These situations require immediate dentist’s intervention. In such cases, the side of the face where the problematic tooth is located usually becomes swollen.

How can the pains be alleviated?

As a first aid remedy, one can take painkillers. Also, in some cases, cold compresses placed on the cheeks can be beneficial. The patient ought to see the dentist as soon as possible.

What is the therapy against the pain?

In most cases endodontic treatment is required, i.e. removing the infected nerve and placing the medicine in the root canals.
