Tooth sensitivity after a filling

Is it normal to feel tooth sensitivity after a filling?

Sometimes after a tooth has just had a filling, it can be sensitive to chewing or to thermal stimuli. This state can last up to a few days, but if it continues to last, it is necessary to see the dentist.

Why does the tooth sensitivity happen?

The most common reason why the tooth sensitivity happens is the damage of a tooth that is too close to the nerve. In this case, the tooth sensitivity occurs as a response to the irritation during the cavity removal.

How can tooth sensitivity be alleviated?

The toothpastes which alleviate the tooth sensitivity can be used. Also, for a certain time, one should avoid solid foods. Avoid everything that can lead to irritations. If necessary, the painkillers can be administered. Naturally, the proper oral hygiene is the priority.

What if the tooth sensitivity happens only when chewing?

In this case, the problem is mostly occlusion, i.e. the contact between the teeth of the upper and lower jaw. The new filling has the stronger contact with the tooth of the opposite jaw. It is necessary to determine the spot of the highest pressure and then remove the part of the filling. The improvement will be noticeable after a day or two.

What is a possible therapy?

The therapy is mostly based on removing the material (filling) and placing the medicine inside the tooth for a few days. In this period, the tooth is filled with a temporary filling. In the case of improvement, the tooth is filled again, but this time with a permanent filling.

What if the tooth sensitivity is persistent?

If the discomfort is not too great, one should wait up until a month. During this period, the tooth should be “spared” of the high pressure, which means consuming softer foods. If still there is no improvement, medicines and changing of the filling are the options.

If the tooth sensitivity is persistent and if it shows no signs of alleviation after different therapies, the next step is endodontic treatment (nerve extraction).

When should you seek professional help?

If the tooth sensitivity lasts more than seven days, with no sign of improvements, you should definitely seek the help from your dentist.
