What is paradontopathy?

Paradontopathy or paradentosis is periodontal disease of the supporting tooth tissue, i.e. the gums, the bone and other tissues surrounding the tooth.

What are the causes of paradontopathy?

The main cause of this disease is inadequate hygiene which leads to the gum inflammation. In the beginning, the inflammation is mild, but later on, it becomes more intensive, leading to the deepening of the gingival sulcus (the space between the gums and the teeth) and to creating of the periodontal pocket, which is the main sign of the presence of the paradntopathy.

What are the symptoms of the disease?

The first visible sign is the dark red gums, which indicates the presence of the inflammation. The gums may be receding, and then the tooth root can be stripped, i.e. exposed. While brushing the teeth, one can expect the bleeding which is more prominent in the advanced stage. Due to the bone loss, the teeth become wobbly and in the terminal stage of the paradontopathy they can fall out on their own. Periodontal pockets are also visible and they can be over 6 mm deep. In addition, the bad breath accompanies the paradontopathy.

What is the therapy for paradontopathy?

First, the patient must take care of their oral hygiene. This means regular teeth cleaning by using the interdental toothbrush and the dental floss. It is advisable to use the mouthwash as well.
The first step the dentist takes is ultrasonic calculus removal and cleaning the teeth from the soft plaque. It is necessary to clean the pockets, i.e. to perform the curettage. If the pockets are too deep, the surgical treatment must be performed.

Can paradontopathy be cured?

The condition of the supporting tooth tissue cannot be restored to its initial state, but further advancement of the disease can be stopped and further gum and bone deterioration can be prevented.

Can the crowns be placed on the teeth showing the signs of paradontoathy?

If the paradontopathy is not in its terminal stage, which means that the teeth are not indicated for extraction, it is necessary to perform dental treatment. After the
symptoms of the disease are gone and the gum inflammation is alleviated, the teeth can be joined and protected with the crowns.
