Laser teeth whitening

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening can be a great way to achieve a brighter colour, without removing the surface of the teeth. This procedure cannot completely change the colour of the teeth, but it can affect the existing shade.

Why do I need teeth whitening?

There are many reasons why one should have their teeth whitened. Everyone is different. Very few people have shiny, white teeth, and our teeth can become darker throughout our life.
Teeth can be coloured on the surface as a consequence of consumption of different foods and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine, etc. Smoking can also darken the teeth. Some people may have stains under the surface of their teeth, which can be caused by certain antibiotics, or tiny cracks in the teeth, in which various pigments are deposited.

How does the whitening procedure look like?

Before the treatment, it is necessary to protect the free edges of the gums to keep them safe from any damage while whitening. After that, a thin layer of bleaching gel, which is based on hydrogen peroxide, is applied on the teeth. Then, each tooth is illuminated for a certain time by a laser beam of light, which makes the gel become activated. The whole process takes about 30 minutes.

What is the advantage of the laser teeth whitening in comparison to the “regular” whitening?

The effects of the laser beam cause the accelerated reaction of hydrogen peroxide in the bleaching gel, which allows the released oxygen to get into the surface layer of the tooth and to perform a bleaching process. The changes occur much faster, and the final result is up to five or six shades of brighter colour.

How long will my teeth stay white?

The result of whitening can last, on average, up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. It is less likely that a brighter shade of your teeth will be kept for so long if you smoke too much, if you use products that can darken your teeth (red wine, curry, coffee). Ask our dental team for the opinion before you decide to whiten your teeth.

What are the side-effects?

The most common side-effect is the mild tooth sensitivity, which lasts from several to 24 hours after teeth whitening.

Can the teeth with “extracted nerve” be whitened?

Yes, they can. Treated teeth become darker after a certain amount of time. During the whitening process of such teeth, the bleaching gel is applied both to the external surface of the teeth, and to the inside of the teeth crowns.

Can ceramic crowns or facets be whitened?

No, they can’t. Whitening can have effects only on natural teeth, not on fixed prosthetic work such as crowns, bridges or facets.
