What is Orthodontic Therapy?

Orthodontic therapy is a way of leveling or moving teeth in order to achieve better position and function of teeth.

Why is Orthodontic Therapy important?

Apart from achieving harmonious look and esthetics of teeth, this therapy helps with adequate transfer of force on teeth during chewing, as well as with regular functioning of the jaw joint.

When teeth are regularly positioned, even their cleaning is easier, which increases the oral hygiene level.

At what age should we have orthodontic therapy?

The best time for orthodontic therapy is childhood. Naturally, orthodontic appliance can be worn by patients of all ages, but the therapeutic result is more uncertain with older people.

Who performs orthodontic therapy?

The therapy is performed exclusively by the orthodontist. Your dentist will direct you to the orthodontist if the therapy is indicated.

Is it tooth extraction necessary in order to create space?

Yes. Sometimes, tooth extraction is indicated in order to achieve regular teeth position. It is often second molars and usually wisdom teeth which are extracted.

What kind of orthodontic appliances are there?

There are fixed and mobile orthodontic appliances. Fixed appliances are fixed on teeth using locks. In the process, the force of special wires affects the teeth, which move them gradually into regular position. Fixed appliances cannot be taken out of the mouth during the therapy. Mobile orthodontic appliances are worn during night and as much as possible during day (four hours minimum). Compared to fixed appliances, they achieve the desired result more slowly.

Is preparation before the therapy important?

The preparation is necessary. This implies cleaning teeth from plaque and soft deposits, as well as treating all caries, extraction of remaining roots etc.

How to maintain teeth with fixed orthodontic appliances?

During the therapy, hygiene must be impeccable. Regular tooth brushing with toothbrush and toothpaste, as well as the usage of interdental toothbrush for cleaning the space between teeth is necessary. Only by regular and adequate oral hygiene can we prevent gum inflammation, caries, and other illnesses during orthodontic therapy.
